Thematic funds cover a wide range of investment ideas, including robotics, the environment and even wine. In the latest edition of ‘Selector snapshot’, one selector shares which thematic funds he is looking at.

We have at least 5% invested in private equity social impact funds, but we also have a look at approaches such as the Sycomore Happy At Work fund. We like thematic funds that focus on technology, security and climate change.

We also like funds linked with commodities such as water. Thematic funds increase the amount of bets in the portfolio. These funds are easy to understand and easy for the asset managers to explain.

There are not that many managers who have disappointed us. It has been a good year for most, but some value managers have fallen behind their benchmarks. There is no vehicle for crypto-currency at the moment for institutional investors. It would also be interesting if there were more listed infrastructure funds as there are not a lot to choose from.

We are starting to feel the benefits of a Macron presidency and he has a programme to reduce corporate taxes. It has caught the eye of asset managers worldwide.

After Brexit, asset managers who have significant AUM on the continent may not take the risk of staying there if their clients are in continental Europe. But for some asset managers in London, nothing will change.
