Thematic investing is only ever an added extra and not something to pin your core hopes on, according to a poll of investor sentiment on Citywire Selector’s website.
Readers from the fund-buying world were asked whether thematic approaches were becoming more important, were only ever added extras or were something to avoid due to their faddish nature.
In response, 63% said that thematic funds were an important, albeit additional, element to their portfolios, while 37% said you definitely need greater specialism to generate returns in today’s market.
This marked an overwhelmingly positive response, as no respondents opted to brand thematics too risky to handle given the influence of passing fads and short-term successes.
The poll was undertaken following a strong show of support for thematic funds at Citywire Zurich 2018, while the latest Citywire Selector podcast – Innovation insights and total return traps – showed a more negative standpoint.
