Pioneer shakes up EMD team amid A-rated manager exit

Pioneer Investments has reshaped the line-ups on several emerging market funds after a Citywire A-rated manager opted to leave the firm, Citywire Selector can reveal.

Emerging markets fixed income manager Alejandro Arevalo left Pioneer Investments after having joined from Standard Bank in 2012.

During his tenure, Arevalo had overseen two funds, the Pioneer Emerging Markets Corporate Bond and Pioneer Funds EM Short Term Bond funds.

Following his departure, management of the Pioneer Emerging Markets Corporate Bond fund will be overseen by Colm D’Rosario, who has been appointed as lead portfolio manager on the fund.

Meanwhile, Pioneer's head of emerging markets – bond and high yield, Yerlan Syzdykov, will also remain a portfolio manager on the strategy.

However, in addition to this role, Syzdykov will now also oversee the Pioneer Funds EM Short Term Bond fund and will be supported by existing co-portfolio manager Paul Nash.

In order to support D’Rosario with his additional duties, Vladan Ognjenovic has been named as a co-portfolio manager on the Pioneer Funds – Emerging Markets Corporate High Yield Bond fund.

Ognjenovic has been supporting D’Rosario on the strategy for the past two years, D’Rosario will remain lead portfolio manager of the fund.

D’Rosario has been a member of the emerging markets team since 2007. Before joining Pioneer, D’Rosario worked as a credit analyst with WGZ Bank, where he was primarily responsible for the research and analysis of asset-backed securities and banks.

Ognjenovic joined Pioneer in 2014 and has over 15 years’ industry experience and spent six years in high yield/distressed sales with Lehman and Nomura. Previously, he was a convertible bond trader with ZCM, with specific responsibility for investments in bonds, options, and equities.

Commenting on the reshuffle of the team, a spokesperson for Pioneer said: 'The emerging markets fixed income team’s investment philosophy is a fundamental research-driven team approach, underpinned by a strong credit culture.'

'This team has a diverse group of over 20 investment professionals and has emphasized teamwork and cross-fertilization throughout its growth in recent years.'

'This has allowed Pioneer to make new appointments with immediate effect, helping to ensure continuity of the investment process and the firm's commitment to clients. We would like to thank Alejandro for his valued contributions as a team member and wish him success in his future career.'
