Franklin Templeton names new EM equity CIO

Franklin Templeton names new EM equity CIO

Franklin Templeton has hired Fullerton Fund Management’s former CIO to serve as its chief investment officer for emerging market equity, Citywire Selector has learned.

Manraj Sekhon is to join the US asset manager on February 19 and brings with him more than 20 years of investment experience focused on the emerging world.

In his new capacity, Sekhon will report to Stephen Dover, who was named CIO of Templeton Emerging Market Group in March 2016 before becoming head of equities in May of last year.

Under the new structure since that time, Dover was given oversight for the investment teams and the respective CIOs. This now includes including Sekhon, who will report to him and be based in Singapore.

The announcement coincides with the formal retirement of Franklin Templeton’s emerging market stalwart Mark Mobius, who completed his last day with the firm on January 31.

Sekhon (pictured) will oversee Franklin Templeton’s more than 80 experienced emerging markets equity investment professionals based in 20 offices around the world and representing over $45 billion in assets under management.

Commenting on the hire, Dover said: ‘As part of the next phase in the evolution of our emerging markets teams, we are pleased to bring on a leader who I am confident will best leverage the breadth of our investment talent across emerging markets equities to deliver the high quality investment strategies and performance that our clients expect.’

During his time with Fullerton Fund Management, where he also served as chief executive, Sekhon drove the growth and strategy of the Singapore-based investment firm on a global basis. He was previously head of international equities at Henderson and has also worked for BlackRock and Invesco.
